How often should I have my piano tuned?

In a home – once a year
In a church/school/piano studio – at least twice a year
In a performance situation – anywhere from once a quarter to once a week
A brand new piano – 3 to 4 times the first year

Why does a piano go out of tune?

Over time, the tension of each string in the piano changes. Help your piano stay in tune longer but maintaining a constant temperature and humidity. (Pianos are build to prefer approximately 70 degrees and 40% humidity.)

What is a pitch raise?

A piano tuner performs a pitch raise when a piano is significantly out of tune. This changes the tension of the strings dramatically and must be followed by a fine tuning.

Does moving a piano change the pitch?

Yes it does. If a piano has to be moved, try to do so as gently as possible. Avoid rolling the casters over door thresholds. If a piano is moved to a different building, allow 2-3 weeks for temperature/humidity changes to occur before having your piano tuned.

Do you tune with a machine?

I use a combination of very sophisticated tuning software (Reyburn Cybertuner) and my ears to create the best tuning for each piano.

What do we do with our old piano?

Many people in this historic part of Texas have upright and grand pianos from the early 1900s. They may look beautiful from the outside, but inside they are full of dried out wood and metal fatigue. Some can be patched up and enjoyed for a little longer. Others would require $5,000 to $20,000 to restore. Brands such as Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, and Baldwin are sometimes worth rebuilding or selling to a rebuilder. If none of these situations applies to you, consider a more creative solution such as a desk, garden planter, or a fantastic bonfire!
